Magazine Research

For my research I chose to look at the well known music magazine NME. This is very popular in the magazine industry so it will give me an idea of what young people enjoy reading about.

General

Which company produces the magazine? The name of the company which produces the magazine is called IPC.

What is the target audience according to the publisher’s website? The target market for this magazine is the younger generation interested in rock music. Although

How much does it cost? The magazine costs £2.30.

How often is it published? The magazine is published weekly.

What is its circulation? The circulation is averaged at 65,000 over the past 11 years.

The Cover

The front cover is a hook. It draws peoples attention and this is more likely to happen if it is attractive and desirable because people would pick it up read a few cover lines and then decide to buy it. I am going to look and analyse why people would decide to buy NME by looking at the cover.

The title: why is it called that? What does the title connote? The title is NME, this stands for New Musical Express. The title connotes the fact that it is a music magazine and the bold letters catches the readers eye because the title it shortened to initials and not written out. It is very bold and stands out because the colour red is very bright and it has a contrasting white border.

What is the logo? The logo for the magazine is the title NME. The magazine is known for these initials in red with a white outline which is why this is used as the logo for the magazine as well as the title. It is also used on there website too. This is known as NME's brand identity.

Is there a strapline? There is no strapline on this magazine.

What is the main image? There is one main image on the front of this magazine, this is the boy band Artic Monkeys. The main image draws in the reader and encourages them to pick up and buy the magazine and then to read the contents because it gives an idea of the style of magazines and one of the articles inside. This makes the main image really important. The image includes four men, which we can assume make up the band. They are all looking in the same direction which is at the camera so when the reader picks up the magazine it is as if the band is looking at them. All of there facial expressions are quite serious and therefore makes the image look quite staged. The band itself is quite casual and this shows in there clothing because they are in quite comfortable, casual clothes like jeans and t-shirts. The focus for that week is the Artic Monkeys which is why they are the main image on the front cover.

What content is promoted by the cover lines? All of the cover lines mentioned are articles inside the magazine. They allow the reader to know what is going to be inside the magazine before they buy it and also draws there attention and makes them want to read the articles. As you can see by looking at the front, the magazine promotes the following singers/bands: Artic Monkeys, Amorphous Androgynous, dead weather, green day, Surfer Blood, Dum Dum Girls, Fool’s Gold, Baby Monster, Islet, the solo artist Dizzee Rascal and Julian Casablanca’s Christmas singles. All of these singers/bands will therefore be mentioned inside the magazine.

Explain the connotations of typefaces (fonts), graphics, colours? The fonts on the front of the magazine are a mixture of sans serif and serif. The colour of the fonts on the front are bright orange which is used to draw in the readers attention, it also contrasts with the red title so that it does not over power the title. The bright colours makes it more interesting and appealing.

What sort of language/language features/language devices can you identify? The cover talks to the reader very casually and it uses a language which makes you want to read the articles. An example of this is the cover line which says "15 new bands to get excited about". This will encourage the reader to read the magazine because they will be excited to find out what new bands are around. Also by having "Artic Monkeys" in such large writing it stands out and draws in all there fans which will enjoy reading about there favourite band. Having a well known band on the front draws more readers in too because if they are unknown it is unlikely people would want to read about them.

Does the cover look similar to other magazines? Like most magazines, NME has its own distinctive features, for example it is not A4, it is slightly longer and wider than the usual magazine. However the position of the title is similar to other magazines.

What is the magazines USP? The magazines unique selling points would be the bright colours and the laid back casual style, which draws your attention and interests anyone.

Inside

The inside is advertised on the front of the magazine. These are usually the cover lines. Also there are adverts inside the magazine which I have used to determine the target audience of the magazine.

How many pages are there in the magazine? There are 68 pages in the magazine.

How many pages of adverts are there in the magazine? There are 23 pages of adverts in this magazine.

What are the different types of advert categories? The adverts can be categorised into types. For example the different types of adverts used in this magazine are: bands and gigs, music, alcohol, clothing, technology and food.

What are the different features and articles in this magazine? Here is a list of the features and articles in this magazine; bands interviews, NME radio, new bands, gigs, NME Chart, Letters, Artic monkeys and a member going to New York, The singer Amorphous Androgynous, the band called The Drum, Latest albums, SWN festival and a Gig Guide.

How many double page spreads are there? What are they about? There are 6 double page spreads throughout the magazine. There are two double page spreads on the same article. The double page spreads are for; what’s on the NME radio, Letters, the 10 most talked about bands, Amorphous Androgynous, The Drums, Underage, Albums and SWN Festival.

Are there any “advertorials” where it is not clear if something is an article or an
advert, or a mixture of both?
There is one advertorial in the magazine, when I first saw page 34 I thought it was an advert however if you study the picture and the writing on the next page it is clear that it is actually an article and a double page spread.

How does the magazine achieve a unified “house style”? The magazine achieved house style by the continuous writing style. For example, the font used is basic and simple so that it can be easily read. The font used for the heading is big and either black or white so that it is bold and contrasts with the background. The language used in the articles throughout the magazine is quite informal this appeals to the reader and target audience because the younger generation would not want to read and would possibly not understand the language if it was formal. Also formal language would not suit the style of the magazine. The colours often used in this magazine is black and red, they are very bold colours and contrast. The logo on the front cover is also red which matches the colour theme inside.
