Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

This is My Preliminary Task on the left. It includes a school magazine front page and contents page. On the right is my final task which includes a music magazine front page and contents.

When looking at my images side by side, I can see just how much I have learnt since last september. I have most definitely had much more experience using Photoshop and Indesign and therefore I was much more confident using it with my main task where as my preliminary task was much more basic. I did not have put as much thought into my preliminary task where as loads went into the creation of my main task. I did not have to think much about how the images would be shot in my preliminary task because I just took pictures of students currently at WGSG, where as I spent hours setting up the the scene, the models hair, make-up and different outfits, the lighting and poses for the photos being shot for my main task. I knew it would take a good few photos before I could be certain it was the perfect shot for my magazine which is why I ended up taking around 500 images. I definitely found this beneficial because after one evening I had all the photos I needed and never had to re-shoot the pictures. I decided not to use props in my photos because I wanted the image to be all about my model, I want the main focus on the front cover to be Rosie and for the reader not to look at the prop. The only other feature which I wanted to attract the readers attention was the quote.
Make-Up... The make-up of the models used for my images is completely different. This is mainly because for my preliminary task I did not even conside the make-up when taking the photos, however the images for my main task were planned much more and the make-up was thought about considerably because I wanted it to be bold, effective and sophisticated for the model.
Mode of Address... The mode of address is completely different on both of my models. The clothes worn by the models in my school magazine are smart and sophisticated because my models were sixth form students at WGSG where as the clother worn on the models in my music magazine are much more glamorous and revealing. This is shown by the fur coat, lace leatard and sequin leggings worn by Rosie and the pink layered dress and black lace dress worn by Rachelle.
Layout... The layout used for the front cover looks fairly similar because they both have the titles at the top, an image in the centre, cover lines sorrounding the image and a decorative box or bar at the bottom. There are some difference which are mainly that my main task front cover contains much more and is a lot busier than the school magazine front cover, this was because I found it difficult to think of cover lines for the school magazine where as I found it much easier to think them up for my music magazine. This was because I have much more interest in music magazines than I do in school magazines. The contents pages however are laid out completely differently. My school magazine has a random layout because I did not plan the layouts for my school magazine but my music magazine contents page had a planned layout which I wanted to be different from the usual magazine. I like to think that the design of my contents page is one of my magazines USPs because it is different from any other from any other magazine, it has an interesting design and still contains all the information needed for the reader.
Problems... I did not have any problems with my school magazine because I did not use any complicated features or ideas within it in anyway. Where as I did encounter many problems whilst using photoshop, which was mainly because certain things just would not do what I wanted them to. For example, I had to create all of the text separately which meant I would have to edit them separately too, however I discovered I could duplicate the layer and therefore I would not have to edit them separately. This occured whilst creating my front page and contents page. I also struggle placing the photos for my double page spread into Indesign because they were always given a white background, However I discovered that from photoshop you could save the image as a PNG which allowed you to enter it into Indesign and for it to not have a background which you could then text wrap the image. I also found the layers in photoshop slightly confusing to begin with because the layer that was wanted on top had to be placed higher that the other layers. Also I often went wrong when editing my images because I would attempt a new idea, for example, adding more eye liner, more eyelashes, brighter lipstick and it just would not work and I would end up deleting or undoing it and starting again until I got it right. Luckily I always did in the end and I was extremely happy with my end result.
Time Management... I would like to say that my time management was impecable but it was not unfortunately. I am not the most practical of people who plans their work and knows what they are doing and when. Obviously, I planned when the shoot for pictures were taking place and I knew my deadlines which I always got the work done for, However, I never evenly spread out the work I had to do and sometimes felt I might not have enough time. I am pleased to say I got my work done though and was pleased with my result.
What I Have Learnt... I have learnt a lot throughout my main task. The main thing was that their is a lot more planning, consideration and effort put into designing a magazines than I originally thought to begin with. I was only designing the Front page, contents page and double page spread of a magazine but I am aware that they usually contain much more and each detail needs to be considered separately and designed to suit the magazine. With what I have learnt throughout however, I would feel very comfortably designing another style of magazine and I am sure that if I was to redo my premilimary task it would be done to a much higher standard.
