Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Before I could consider what my magazine would look like, how it would be deisgned and laid out andwhat it would feature. I needed to decide on a target audience for my product. This is the most important thing I had to consider. I knew that I wanted to teenagers and young adults, mainly of the female gender because being one myself I knew the interest of the majority of them and I could have a huge input into the magazine itself. It is a mass market so there would be loads of people interested in this genre of magazine. Also after reasearching current popular music magazines I noticed that there was not a current music magazine for this type of genre and so I wanted to create something slightly different to the others.

Music Genres...

There are many different types of music genres. They are listed below:

  • Reggae
  • Gospel
  • Rock
  • Blues
  • New Age
  • Soundtrack/Theme songs
  • Opera
  • Blue Grass
  • Punk
  • International
  • Classical
  • Rap/Hip-Hop
  • Jazz
  • Dance/Electronica
  • Soul/RnB
  • House
  • Funk
  • Oldies
  • Pop
  • Religious
  • Folk
  • Country
  • Heavy Metal

Everyone is interested in different music genres and it often says a lot about someones personality. You can usually predict what a person will be like depending on what music they are interested in. Many things can affect the type of genre of music that you are interested in, these are; your religion, age, sex, how you have been brought up, where you have been brought up, what your parents listen to, what your friends listen to, the school you go to and your personal interests.

I asked all of my friends what type of music genre most interests them. My group of friends represent what 17 year old girls are stereotypically known as and I am one of them. They are all quite similar when there interests are considered so when there prefered genre of music seemed to be either, RnB, Hip-Hop, Pop and House. To me it seemed rather obvious what the typical 17 year old girls listened to. I also asked my sister the same question, she is two years older and I already knew that she is very universal when it comes to music genres, However she also said that her prefered genre was RnB and House. Therefore, I can see that it is not likely to change much as you get older but you taste might just widen.

Social Status...

Social Status is also something that I considered when thinking about my target market. A social status is a name or rank given to someone who is stereotypically seen as something. Depending on their personalities, image and interests can depend on what social group they are seen to be in. Here are a few of the different social groups:

The typical Kerrang reader would be seen as a grunger, goth or emo where as a typical Mojo reader would be seen as a oldie or a hippie. However I think the typical read of my magazine would be a Trendie or Urban.

The typical reader for my magazine...

Here is a collage of images that would stereotypically be a reader for my magazine, it also contains some of the interests my readers would have.

- A teenager or young adult (16-25)
- Female
- Someone who is interested in RnB music
- Have interests in the latest films (Bounty Hunter, Shutter Island and Avatar) because these are likely to be advertised in my magazine and also popular TV programs such as; realistic Tv and programs like Big Brother and Im a Celebrity get me out of here.
- They would be quite fashionable and would pay interest in what the music artists featuring in the magazine would be wearing. They would love to shop and would shop in places such as; New Look, River Island and Topshop.
